TWiRT 177 - Christian Vang: Challenge Accepted

Christian Vang, an engineer at ESPN Audio Technology Group, was asked to install an on-air talkshow system. The catch? The control room, talent studio, and call screeners are all in different cities, separated by hundreds of miles. “Challenge accepted!” Vang replied. Christian tells the story along with great advice for engineers to expand their skills and value.

TWiRT 174 - Dan McQuillin & Beyond Listeners

Radio broadcasting’s one-to-many model isn’t broken, but it certainly needs an update. TV pushed radio out of the living room; iPods and smart phones pushed radio out of the pocket. But radio still engages us in ways that social media doesn’t. Dan McQuillin, founder of Broadcast Bionics, describes the kind of compelling listener interaction that radio broadcasters must engage in.

TWiRT 173 - Billy, You Are a Hero

VoIP is coming to a station near you. It’s mature technology at work in over 80% of new enterprise telephone systems. With a little research you can be a can be a hero at your station. Reduce operating costs and add flexibility. SIP (the most popular VoIP protocol) is one of the most useful and exciting technologies available to terrestrial and Internet broadcasters. Broadcast engineers, who are naturally curious about new technologies, should download Blink from http://www.icanblink.com, set up a free SIP account, and have fun with SIP.
