TWiRT 193 - Quit Streaming MP3, with Greg Ogonowski

Processing and stream encoding guru, Greg Ogonowski, says “Stop using MP3 and encode with a modern codec. Save money and sound better, too.” So, what’s wrong with our beloved MP3? And what should Internet streamers be using? And what about the Opus codec?

Why is TWiRT downloadable as an MP3 file instead of an AAC file? I convert the MP3 to AAC 32,000Hz sample rate and 48Kbps bit rate so it will take less space on my audio player. I do not like SBR for music but it is OK for speech. I do not use SBR for anything.

As we like to be seen to be fair and transparent at TWIRT - Check out the latest audio files with OPUS 1.1 coding, the difference is more than subtle when compared to HE AAC files courtesy of Mozilla.org using Greg's originals

I wish that there were Opus plug-ins for iTunes, Safari, Firefox, Songbird, Rhythm box, and other audio programs so I could play Opus audio files. Apple is no longer a leader in audio like they were when AAC was adopted for use in the iTunes program and iPods, so I do not expect them to do what they would have done when Steve Jobs was in charge and adopt Opus.
